REJECT RACISM IN THE MEDIA
REJECT RACISM IN THE MEDIA
As is publicly known, in several television programs are broadcast messages that reveal racial prejudices and stereotypes, to which the undersigned institutions and individuals mentioned:
1. Racism expresses a proposal justifying human relations and hierarchies of inequalities between people because of their race.
2. In Peru, racism is a structural problem, ie is expressed in everyday relationships and symbolic, restricting full access to the political, social and economic development of people belonging to historically disadvantaged groups discrimination: African descent, mostly indigenous Andean and Amazonian.
3. The construction of social relationships and respectful of human rights, diversity, freedom of expression and democracy requires citizens to denounce commitments made racist but also proposals to build a country with no guarantee of equality and discrimination. This includes mass media, whose responsibility is undeniable when it comes to the dissemination of information and recreation that does not undermine human dignity, such as comic characters of "Black Mama" and "The Peasant Jacinta."
4. The Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination United Nations has recommended to the Peruvian State to promote the adoption of a "Code of ethics for the media" which commits them to respect the identity and culture of peoples indigenous and Afro-Peruvian communities. We require that this task is taken care of with priority by the Peruvian government.
5. Finally, we believe in the urgent need to further analyze racism and its impact on the country, understanding this phenomenon as a complex problem that needs to be addressed from various levels of education, the exercise of citizenship, legislation, etc. Comedy shows that have led to a series of reports and opinions of Peruvians have not done more to reflect a problem in the country, at other times as the internal armed conflict Peru, was cause for serious violations of Human Rights hundreds of people.
6. We demand:
• An in-depth discussion on social responsibility with the media, not to promote racism and other forms of discrimination.
• Public policies of respect for ethnic racial, sexual and cultural in our country.
• Effective legislation, to punish racism and all forms of discrimination.
urge that citizens assume the responsibility to punish socially racism, no racist consuming products.
